Okay, I love dogs, so I was bound to be a sucker for Rob Snyder’s POKER NIGHT: THE REAL STORY OF DOGS PLAYING POKER. The book’s rather a cute idea, and it’s not without literary precedent—even a highbrow like Virginia Woolf wrote FLUSH, which is told from the point of view of Elizabeth Barret Browning’s cocker spaniel; Amy Hempel edited a collection of poems “written” by writers’ dogs; Richard Adams spent his whole career writing from the point of view of animals in WATERSHIP DOWN and THE PLAGUE DOGS, among others. Snyder is clearly having a good time with this work, but it also illustrates his deep caring for animals—he’s worked for animal shelters, and is pictured at the back of the book with two extremely cute pooches. He’s doing something risky here, since it can quickly get too sappy when you spend too much time trying to write from the point of view of an animal. But for the most part, Snyder avoids this trap and the result is consistently entertaining.

If you love pets, have rescued a pet or just love to read you will love this book. The book is easy reading and the story draws you in to it where you want to continue reading. It also answers many questions about what rescued pets and what life may have been like for them before. Also makes you wonder what do your pets do when you are not around?!! 2 thumbs up for Poker Night by Rob Snyder :)

A fun perspective on the lives of dogs with lots of insight into shelter dogs and their struggles. This is a great book for anyone who is an animal lover! I also enjoyed the flashbacks to famous dogs of the past. Rob has used a creative spin that is unique and I haven't seen before in a novel...great job!
